Understanding GB 38031-2020: What EV Battery Certification Really Means

NEO ENERGY Team · 24 July 2026 · 5 min read

GB 38031-2020 is the Chinese national standard for the safety of electric vehicle traction batteries — and it's the standard every repair NEO ENERGY performs is verified against, not just the standard a pack was originally built to.

The standard isn't a paperwork exercise. It's a set of physical tests a battery pack has to survive: nail penetration, which simulates a sharp object piercing a cell without triggering a fire or explosion; water immersion, submerging a pack for a sustained period to confirm sealing integrity holds; and vibration and mechanical shock testing, which simulates the punishment a pack takes over years of real driving — potholes, kerbs, and the ordinary wear of daily use.

Why does this matter for a repair, not just a new pack? Because a repair that doesn't restore a pack to these same tolerances hasn't actually fixed the problem — it's created a battery that looks repaired but hasn't been proven safe. That's the gap between a generalist workshop swapping a pack and an authorised team repairing the component: the second one is still accountable to the same standard the manufacturer was.

This is also why component-level diagnostics matter more than they might seem to at first. A pack that fails a safety check at the cell or busbar level, but passes at a glance, is a genuine risk hiding behind a working dashboard light. Testing to GB 38031-2020 is how that gap gets closed.
